In recent business developments, the rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) stands out as a particularly intriguing advancement, offering a unique set of challenges and opportunities for moral leaders. Our study shows that generative AI is already making its mark, with 29% of respondents noting that their organizations are incorporating AI tools into daily operations.

Ethical Implications of AI in Leadership

As AI technologies evolve, they raise significant considerations for moral leaders. Advanced AI systems not only reshape the landscape of moral leadership but also take on substantial decision-making roles. This scenario prompts crucial strategic and ethical questions, especially about the decision-making capabilities of AI. A significant portion of our respondents expressed concern over the ethical implications of AI, with 71% at least somewhat concerned and 39% very or extremely concerned about AI making morally questionable decisions.

These findings highlight the necessity for moral leaders to engage deeply with the ethical dimensions of AI. Leaders must balance leveraging AI’s analytical capabilities for societal benefit with mitigating the risks of AI acting in ways not aligned with social good. To support moral leadership, AI systems must be designed and operated in accordance with ethical principles.

Optimism and Preparedness for Ethical AI Development

Despite the concerns about AI’s potential for unethical behavior, its analytical power also holds great potential for societal benefits. We asked participants about their optimism regarding society’s ability to develop AI systems that behave morally and ethically, and over 40% expressed that they were somewhat, very, or extremely optimistic.

Leaders’ Preparedness for Understanding AI’s Moral Implications

Participants also shared their views on how prepared today’s leaders are to understand the moral implications of AI. The majority—59%—believe that today’s leaders are somewhat or very unprepared for these challenges, while only 16% felt that leaders are somewhat or very well-prepared. This underscores the urgent need for moral leaders to enhance their understanding of AI and its ethical implications.

The advent of generative AI presents both challenges and opportunities for moral leaders. It calls for a proactive approach in educating themselves and their teams about AI technologies, fostering a culture of ethical AI use, and actively participating in discussions on developing moral and ethical AI systems.
